My former big boss and gentle giant of a man.

Gayle L. Griffin – Deputy Commissioner December 1999 to October 2006
Gayle L. Griffin, Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Banking since December 1999 passed away on October 3, 2006, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Gayle was with the Department 25 plus years and was an icon to the agency having oversight of bank and trust supervision responsibilities, corporate activities, information technology, and legislative issues to name a few. Gayle was very instrumental in advancing the agency in the areas of risk focused supervision, internal education program development, document imaging, and information technology training. Gayle’s standards for excellence and professionalism along with a healthy dose of good ole common sense are woven into the agency’s corporate fabric and will forever be remembered.

The Department lost not only a great regulator with Gayle’s passing but an even greater friend. Gayle loved working at the Department of Banking. He took great pride in the agency’s accomplishments, but more importantly in the agency’s people. He also acquired many friendships over the years with examiners, bankers, educators, and other government officials across the state and nation.

Gayle began his regulatory career in 1978 and advanced through the ranks starting as an assistant examiner in Houston. After serving as Regional Director of the Dallas Regional Office, he left the Department in 1989 to work with the Secura Group, a national consulting firm. He rejoined the Department in 1991 and was appointed Deputy Commissioner in December 1999.
